7 Ways to Get More Out of Bible Reading
1. Pre-Reading Prayer.
Before you start reading, say a short, simple, raw prayer to God asking Him to meet you as you seek Him. He promises to be found by us when we seek Him, so let’s ask for just that.
2. Bible
The most obvious need to get more out of Bible reading, but let’s talk about HOW we read the Bible. I like to go through books of the Bible so that I know what I’m reading each day. It helps me to be consistent. Usually I try to have a chapter a day as my guide, but sometimes it’s more and sometimes it’s less. I’m not limiting myself to that one chapter, but it is a helpful guide.
3. Journal
I journal what God is speaking to me about, or things that stand out to me in my Bible, as I read. I’ll pause and write and then continue to read. Journaling not only transforms passive reading into active reading but it helps me to really remember what that Lord was showing me in His word as I go throughout my day, week, month and life.
4. Post-Reading Prayer
This prayer time looks different than our pre-reading prayer. Now is the time to pray about what you read, praise God for who He is, express thanks, pray for others and pray for yourself.
5. Commentaries
Commentaries are a great way to dive in deeper to your reading. They help you understand context and even specific words. In any point of confusion, or just for extra insight, commentaries are a great go-to. I highly reocmmend David Guzik.
6. Studies
Studies are a great way to really help show us that what we read in the Bible is applicable and practical. Whether it’s topical or by a book of the Bible, studies are a great tool. She Lives Purposefully has its own Bible studies!
7. Accountability
Accountability is helpful to keep ourselves and others in check when it comes to whether or not or how often we’re spending time with Jesus. Even simply asking what our fiends are reading or what Jesus is speaking to them about can be an exhortation to keep reading scripture for ourselves and for our friends. In addition to these convos, go to Bible studies together or do studies together! If you don’t have this already, community can be a great help in encouraging us to keep seeking Jesus –
You can start by asking friends to keep you accountable or join a church small group!

PLUS, people say they love the sound of my voice, but, hey, I’ll leave that up to you to decide.

Often we can read the Bible like these vague stories but here are a list of specific people - men and women - that Paul wants to greet. Just like you and I, this letter was written by and received by real people in the church, the body of Christ - real sinners...
Mini Devo Romans 15:22-33
I love these details we get in letters like these, and here’s one big reason why: Even Paul was unsure his plans and was redirected. He was unsure how he’d be received in Jerusalem and Judea. He had plans to go to Spain and HOPED to see the romans, but wasn’t sure...
Romans 15:14-21
Honestly - this hit me. “For I will not venture to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me.” May we not boast in things we did in our own strength. Let’s allow God to move in us and let what HE is doing be what we boast about.
Mini Devo Romans 15:8-13
Can I pray this same prayer we read in this passage over you right now? God, I pray that You, the God of hope would FILL this community will ALL JOY and PEACE in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit they may ABOUND in HOPE.
