Dear anxious heart,
Be Still
Be still my anxious heart.
If only, right? If only we could just tell our hearts to be still and they would be. If only with those two words our minds and hearts could release the weight of the stresses, worries and concerns of the known and unknown.
The radical thing is that those two words can actually calm the raging seas in our lives. These two words hold real weight and ability for change when and only when the One who says them has any and all power, knowledge and love for us in those situations that cause us to worry and stress.
Oftentimes we need that affirmed to us over and over again. Here are two verses to cling to that assure us of just why we can be still just because God calls us to.
Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”
God here says to be still. Why can we be still? Because you can know that He is God. I am not God. You are not God. The person altering your life is not God. The situation shaking things up is not God nor does it have the power to be. We don’t have the power to be God or (praise the Lord) the responsibility to be God.
But God is God. He is the One in control. He is the One who knew your situation before it began. He is the One who actually cares more than we do. He is the One who brings beauty from ashes. He’s the One who redeems and restores. He is the One who brings justice and vengeance. And we can know that this One – who loves and cares and has power, is the One in control.
And He already knows the end from the beginning – He knows how it ends. He will be exalted — and when that happens we know all will be made right. There is a bigger picture than this day or season of life. And He has us under His wings.
Exodus 14:14 says “The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.”
A friend actually sent this to me this month with the encouragement that life is NOT up to me to fix. I can’t do it and it’s not my job to do it. I get to be still. In fact, I’m commanded to be still. Why? Because the LORD promises He will fight for me.
He will fight for me. He does fight for me.
He actually says that because He fights for me – which He promises to do – I don’t need to also fight for myself or direct Him how to fight for me or make sure I have control of what’s happening. No. All I need to do – is be still.
These two verses have given me such hope when I’m anxious. We can hear the words be still, but to know the power of Who they’re said by is what brings power to those words. We can be still because He is God. We can be still because our God fights for us.
XO,
Meg
